The Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 as the first university in the Western Hemisphere based on the European research institution, with a mission both to teach and to advance human knowledge through discovery. Its establishment revolutionized U.S. higher education; today, it remains a world leader in education, research, and patient care.
The University is comprised of nine academic divisions, over 100 multidisciplinary centers and institutes, The Applied Physics Laboratory – a division of the university co-equal to the nine schools but with a non-academic, research-based mission – and eleven campuses including Nanjing, China, and Bologna, Italy.
In 2014, our research was conducted by more than 6,500 faculty and scientists working in 154 countries with total revenues exceeding $1.9 billion. We also expanded our investment in technology transfer, filing 92 new U.S. Patents and creating 13 new startups, while holding 2,324 Active Patents and 3,898 completed Material Transfer Agreements.
Always our greatest asset, our faculty have continued to be recognized for their groundbreaking research with such awards as the Nobel Prize, Lasker Award, National Medal of Science, Pulitzer Prize, and Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal, in addition to membership to such prestigious organizations as the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine.
Building on these successes, President Ronald Daniels’ Ten by Twenty Initiative is forging a roadmap for our future, with a particular emphasis on growing the research environment (see the Progress Report). The collaborative effort of this initiative reinforces that Johns Hopkins University has been and continues to be a place of remarkable collaboration across world class disciplines. We continue to seek out new and innovative ideas from all across the globe and as we look ahead, it’s clear that Johns Hopkins University research programs and academics will continue to produce pioneering investigations and world-class results.

Several offices assist with the solicitation, negotiation, and management of sponsored projects and gifts in support of research carried out at Johns Hopkins:
- Johns Hopkins University Research Administration (JHURA) reviews and approves all sponsored proposals, and drafts, negotiates and signs all sponsored grants and contracts, including unfunded agreements such as nondisclosure agreements, for all JHU divisions other than SOM and KSAS. JHURA is also responsible for compliance and regulatory matters related to sponsored research, and includes the Office of Export Controls and the Office of Research Information Services (ORIS), the latter of which manages the Coeus system.
- The Business and Research Administration Office (BARA) of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences works with principal investigators and department staff throughout the process of proposal development and submission, award negotiation, day-to-day award management, and award closeout, serving as a “one stop shop” for all sponsored project-related needs.
- The School of Medicine Office of Research Administration reviews all sponsored research proposals and awards, reviews and negotiates all commercial Clinical Research agreements, and provides expertise in clinical research patient care coverage analysis, comprehensive budget development and budget negotiations with corporate sponsors.
- Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures helps develop new discoveries and inventions into products and services by assisting inventors and entrepreneurs with protecting and licensing their innovations and fostering collaboration with business partners who specialize in launching new inventions.
