 BANDS

Flute Choir

The Johns Hopkins University Flute Choir performs as a choir as well as breaking into smaller duets, trios and quartets. They have performed for numerous events on and off campus including club dinners, award ceremonies, services, etc, as well as in the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra chamber concert series. Musical selections range in style from classical to cultural to holiday and more with varying instrumentation (adding piccolos, alto flute, piano accompaniment). They rehearse once a week as a choir on Wednesdays.

Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Band

JHU Jazz is composed of a number of diverse groups. They feature two 18-piece jazz orchestras - the JHU Jazz Ensemble and the JHU Jazz Band.

The Jazz Ensemble plays in a traditional and modern big band style, ranging in repertoire and including pieces written and arranged by the director, Matt Belzer. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses Thursday nights from 8-10pm in the SDS Room of the Mattin Center. Matt also composes for the Jazz Band, which rehearses on Wednesday night, 8:30-10:30pm, also in the SDS Room. Both groups give two formal concerts a year, one per semester.

The program also contains many small groups, ranging from the eclectic to the most traditional. Each year the Jazz ensembles play numerous engagements on the Homewood campus and at area swing dances, local schools, and jazz festivals. In particular, the groups play each year at the prestigious Villanova Jazz Festival.

Pep Band

The Pep Band plays at both home and away Hopkins lacrosse and football games. From the school song, “Johnny Hopkins on to Victory”, and “The Star Spangled Banner,” to the regular crowd pleasers, the Pep Band is a vital part of any varsity football or lacrosse game. Non-audition, they are directed by Brian Drake, and rehearse from 8:30 to 9:30pm Sunday evenings in the SDS Room, Mattin Center, right after the Wind Ensemble rehearsal.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble, the largest student instrumental ensemble on campus, is directed by Brian Drake. The full Wind Ensemble rehearses twice weekly in the SDS Room in the Mattin Center, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Wednesdays, and 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Sundays.

There is one concert in the fall and one in the spring, both in Shriver Auditorium. They welcome players of varying playing abilities, and the repertoire varies. There are no auditions to be a member of the Wind Ensemble, and though it is an extracurricular activity, there is an attendance policy to keep the ensemble at a high performing quality.
