Letter from the Dean

Welcome to the start of a new academic year! Many opportunities for growth await you. Your academic classes and labs will challenge and stimulate you. You will both broaden your horizons and share your ideas. We encourage you to get involved in at least one area outside of the classroom. Our experience has shown, and studies have consistently proven, that students involved in at least one activity are happier, better-adjusted, enjoy life more, and are better prepared for life after college.

Hopkins provides its students with a vast array of extra-curricular activities to enrich both their bodies and minds. Join in one of the recreational sports programs, or one of the over 300 clubs and organizations on campus. You might want to give of your time and talent by serving on one of the numerous volunteer projects or by working either on or off campus. Any one of these will benefit you and fortify your academic experience.

We have made major physical improvements to the Homewood campus over the past ten years which are designed to enhance student life. We celebrated the opening of the Bunting-Meyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center in 1999. In January of 2001, we opened the Ralph O’Connor Recreation Center attached to the existing Athletic Center.  We also opened the Mattin Student Arts Center at Charles and 33rd Streets in January 2001.

Most recently, September 2006 marked the opening of the Charles Commons on the corner of North Charles Street and 33rd street. This new residential and retail space both houses students and serves as a great addition to the entire community with the anchor store, Barnes and Noble.  We are excited about the opportunities this new building brings to campus.

We also encourage you to get to know the student affairs staff on campus. We are here to help enrich your Hopkins experience and support you through your academic and personal development. We want your ideas and feedback, either through sending us an e-mail at studentlife@jhu.edu or through individual appointments. Whatever your interest or concern, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff.
