SPINNING® CLASSES

The Spinning® program is the original indoor group cycling program, created over 25 years ago by ultra-endurance athlete Johnny G. With proven coaching principles and a mind/body element, Spinning brings health and fitness to people of all ages, sizes, and abilities. If you can pedal, you can participate – no experience is necessary and all levels are welcome!

YOGA
Classes are conducted barefoot. Yoga mats are provided for class participants, or are available for purchase from the Office of Recreation.

BASIC YOGA
Whether you're new to yoga or you find our other yoga classes to be a little out of your league, try this 45 minute class on for size! Basic Yoga will be conducted at a reduced intensity with emphasis on on learning the main poses, postures, and yoga philosophy.
Meets on the "Martial Arts" side of the Multi-Purpose Room.

ACTIVE BEGINNERS YOGA
Active beginners is for students looking to move beyond basic postures and into an integrative practice. A mix between familar poses and unpredictable challenges, this class will hone your present awareness.

YOGA / TRADITIONAL YOGA
This class offers a little over an hour of yoga geared towards gaining fundamental skills. Various techniques will be used in the classes with emphasis on flowing postures and breath awareness. Through basic yoga poses, participants will also work towards relaxation, mental clarity, and tuning in to their bodies.

SUNRISE YOGA
You may start the class in darkness but you’ll finish in the sunlight – our Multi-Purpose Room offers a great view of the Baltimore sunrise. It’s an early morning version of “Traditional Yoga” and a terrific way to start your day!

YOGA LUNCH EXPRESS
Take a mid-day break from your hectic work or class schedule by infusing it with relaxation and movement to help relieve tight muscles, aches, and pains. Relieve stress and tension and bring strength, flexibility, and well-being back into your work! No previous experience necessary.

TGIF YOGA

VINYASA FLOW
Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a sequence of asanas (poses) that flow together harmoniously.  This class is intended to teach the foundations of vinyasa, allowing the connection between breath and body through mindful movement and heat-building sequences. Be prepared to sweat as energy begins to flow.

YOGA FITNESS FOR A HEALTHY BACK
Whether you need a little prevention or some mindful maintenance, this class offers a safe and effective yoga-based fitness session for functional spine stability and health. Class is geared mainly toward stretching, stabilizing, and strengthening the lower back, abdominals, and hip region through various yoga postures.
NOTE: If you have significant back health issues, please consult your physician prior to attending class.

YOGA CORE
Aimed at the midsection of your body - your core - this yoga-based class will strengthen, align, and stabilize your spine and abdominals through flowing movements and various yoga postures.  No experience necessary!

YOGA FOR ATHLETES
This class will take your chosen sport to the next level by stretching and strengthening key joints and muscles.

YOGA NIDRA
Yoga Nidra means "deep yoga sleep" and is an ancient form of guided relaxation that will guide you to a place of deep mental and physical relaxation.  It's a great way to de-stress and relax after a difficult week! No experience necessary. Students should bring a blanket.

YOGALATES
It's a little bit yoga and a little bit Pilates...combined! Try this hybrid class on for a unique way to stretch and strengthen your body.

PILATES MATWORK
Once the secret favorite of professional dancers, Pilates is now practiced by Hollywood’s movers & shakers, and fitness devotees. This strengthening workout emphasizes total body integration through fluid movements initiated from the center core of the body. Its non-impactive movements also aid flexibility and balance. Devotees swear it creates longer muscles without bulk and engages the mind like few other workouts can. Classes are conducted barefoot and will be held on the "Martial Arts" side of the Multi-Purpose Room. 

BASIC PILATES/ PILATES MAT I
Geared towards individuals needing to learn the fundamentals of Pilates matwork or preferring a lower intensity workout.

PILATES MAT II (aka INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED PILATES)
An intermediate and advanced level class building on the fundamental skills and exercises in Pilates I.

PILATES ON THE BALL
Take your Pilates practice to a new level by utilizing the wildy popular stability ball! Exercises will use the ball for added assistance or for extra leverage, but all for a great workout.

PROP PILATES
Need something different for your pilates regime?  This class uses extra props to tailor a better workout to your body.  Balls, bands, blocks, and a few other choice fitness toys will be used, and while some pilates experience is recommended this will be a mixed level class.

STEP AEROBICS
Quite possibly more intense than a workout on the floor and yet way more interactive than a Stairmaster, we add a stepping bench to create a cardiovascular workout that moves up, down, and all around. It will benefit your entire body and engage your mind!

BASIC STEP is a 45 minute class for individuals who need either to learn basic step aerobic movements or prefer to work at a lower intensity than our other step aerobics classes.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED STEP is a 60 minute class for individuals who can work at a higher intensity and are familiar with Step movements.

ADVANCED STEP is a 60 minute class for individuals who can work at a high intensity and are very familiar with Step movements – it is not recommended for beginners!

STEP & ABS is a 45 minute lunchtime class that focuses mainly on step choreography and finishes with an abdominal strengthening segment.

CARDIOKICKBOXING
A session of punching, kicking, and boxer-type conditioning that will challenge your arms, legs, abs, lungs, heart, mind, will, …everything! You’ll get a full-body workout and leave with a feeling of empowerment.

BASIC CARDIOKICKBOX is a 45 minute class for individuals who need either to learn basic cardiokickboxing movements or prefer to work at a lower intensity than our other cardiokickboxing classes.

ATHLETICALLY-BASED CLASSES
Bring back some memories of PE and lose your dance shoes for these sessions.

RUNNING 101
This class is designed for beginner and intermediate runners wanting to learn more about proper running techniques, wanting to train for a 5k race, wanting a fellow runner's encouragement for those long runs, or just wanting some new running workouts. The class will utilize the indoor track, outdoor track, and possibly some neighborhoods in the Hopkins area. Led by one of our certified personal trainers, you'll get expert instruction on proper warm-up, cardiovascular conditioning, cool-down, and stretching techniques. Don't miss out, but DO come to class hydrated and with appropriate layered clothing for outdoor running as necessary.
Meets in the Rec Center lobby. Class is conducted indoors until further notice.

RED CARPET READY
If you aim to be at your physical best by spring break, try this fun and challenging class on for size!  Sessions will pull from various genres of exercise (aerobics, yoga, pilates, spinning, dance, etc.) and challenge you to be fit and healthy.

MUSCLE CLASSES

AFTERBURN
Exclusively for individuals who participated in the step aerobics class prior to it, AfterBurn is a chaser workout with weights. With this extra 20 minutes, you'll add strength training on to your cardio and have a complete workout.
This class is not open to individuals who did not participate in the step aerobics class immediately prior.

BODY TONING
With various types of equipment, this session offers a low-impact strengthening session that will increase your muscle tone and make you stronger all over in 45 minutes. It’s a terrific alternative to the weight room!

CIRCUIT TONING /CIRCUIT TRAINING
A spin-off of Body Toning, this class arranges the exercises into stations that participants cycle through.

GUTS & BUTTS

HARD BODIES
Our hybrid class integrates stability ball training, yoga, pilates, and traditional calisthenics to create a class that is challenging, fresh and fun. We do a little bit of everything to develop a body that is flexible, functional, and firm! Be prepared to sweat to fun music and try some hot new fitness moves.

BALLET BODY
Follow the exercises professional dancers use to keep themselves strong and lean. No ballet training required - but you'll be doing some of the moves anyway! Flexibility, strength, grace, and balance will be the goals of the class. Try this new and fun workout on for size.

BALLET 101 / BALLET FOR JOCKS
Dance-challenged people of Hopkins unite! Ballet 101/Ballet For Jocks is our answer for athletes, klutzes, and newbie balletomanes who want to try the discipline of ballet without the tutus or tights. Through a series of ballet movements and expert instruction, this class develops flexibility, strength, and grace, all with a key emphasis on posture throughout. No bulk added here, just coordination and balance!

BOOGIE TO BHANGRA
Bhangra is a folk dance orginating from the norther region of India. This hour long class gives anyone and everyone a great way to be active!

BREAKDANCE
Crazy spins and outrageous tricks will be your new trademark!  This class is geared towards beginner breakdancers who want to learn this fun genre of movement. Moves will be taught safely and slowly, and you'll be impressed by what you can do by the end of the semester!

CARDIOJAZZ
Think Broadway at Hopkins... Dance your day away with this new hybrid session! It's a traditional dance class with a fitness edge. Be sure to bring your jazz hands!

STRIPPERCIZE
Wear your hair down and a few layers of clothing to take off as you go along...
This session combines provocative dance moves with flexibility training and toning exercises to achieve a total-body moving session that emphasizes attitude, sensuality, and teasing fun. Our class at Hopkins has two rules: 1) everybody in here has a great body, and 2) everybody participates at the level she feels comfortable at. We’re pushing the envelope on how to get fit – join us for this unique way to move your body!
