JHU Experiential Education's Pre-Orientation!

The Johns Hopkins University Experiential Education program offers various week-long Pre-Orientation outdoor experiences for incoming students. Facilitated by upperclassmen in the Experiential Education program, participants will learn valuable outdoors skills, overcome new challenges and learn about student life at Johns Hopkins.  Throughout each of the outdoor experiences, including Backpacking, Climbing, White Water Kayaking, Canoeing and Hiking, and Multi-Element, groups of incoming students will have the opportunity to create meaningful friendships before moving onto campus. None of the trips require previous outdoors experience!

The mission of Pre-Orientation is to offer a meaningful and exciting wilderness experiences that provides incoming students with the opportunity to establish a network of peer support that better prepares them for the transition into life at Johns Hopkins University.

About Pre-O

So, it's the week before Freshmen Orientation; you could spend it at home, biting your nails, pacing your room, packing and repacking... but we strongly recommend an exciting alternative: Pre-Orientation!

Pre-O is a program offered exclusively to incoming freshmen who are looking for a new experience. JHU Experiential Education offers six outdoor excursions that run the gamut from water to land and everything in between. Whether you are looking for an intense adventure or something a little more relaxed, we have options for everyone - and no matter the trip, no experience is necessary! Take advantage of the last days of summer and meet fellow freshmen before the academic year kicks into high gear! You may even pick up a few backcountry skills that will help you survive college...

Upperclassmen from the Office of Experiential Education's Outdoor Pursuits and Johns Hopkins Outdoors Club programs will be lead you on these adventures, helping you ease into your new life at Hopkins.  Our instructors have terrific outdoor skills, and their personalities are not too shabby either. Instructors spend a lot of time training: all of them are certified as Wilderness First Responders and CPR providers and have taken part in a 10- day Outdoor Leadership course. We have been running Pre-O for over 15 years, and we are excited to have you on this unforgettable experience!

How do I get there?

Lots of students travel from far and wide to get to Johns Hopkins University.  You will have to make your own travel arrangement to be on campus the day before Pre-0.  The day before your trip leaves you will be allowed to move into your dorm.

Other Pre-Orientation Options

The Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Concern also offers two pre-orientation programs for incoming students interested in exploring the university and Baltimore through service. HopkinsCORPS is a week-long introduction to the social justice issues affecting Baltimore through a combination of service projects, trips to local community organizations, cultural events, and leadership development activities. During the Habitat for Humanity Pre-Orientation program, students renovate houses throughout the Baltimore area while connecting with other members of the freshman class and learning about housing access across our region.
