Wilderness First Responder Certification Course

This January we are offering Wilderness First Responder certification class through the Wilderness Medical Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School. WFR is an 80-hour intensive course lasting ten days. The fee for the WFR course is $650. Course dates are January 11th to Jaunary 20th, 2010.

COURSE INFORMATION: Essential for anyone who spends significant time in remote places or who has a professional career in the outdoors, the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course will prepare you to make difficult medical decisions. This course is fast-paced and engaging. You'll spend half your time outside of the classroom doing hands-on skills and realistic scenarios. In addition to scenarios, you'll participate in a full-scale night mock rescue. WMI's curriculum encompasses a wide range of topics including long-term patient care, wound management, straightening angulated fractures, reducing dislocations, litter packaging and administering medications. You'll complete this course with the tools and confidence to manage patients in the backcountry for multiple days. The intensive 80-hour curriculum is nationally recognized and supported by the Wilderness Medicine Institute's Medical Advisory Panel. You'll be taught by dynamic educators who have practiced both wilderness and urban medicine. This 10-day course is ideal for all professionals operating in remote environments.  Adult/child CPR certification is included. The WFR course is pre-approved for 70 hours of EMT CEU's by CECBEMS.

The course is offered on the Homewood campus of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Check in is at 7:45 AM on the first day of the course. Course days run from 8:00am - 5:00pm. Two evening sessions will be scheduled. The format for this 80-hour WFR is classroom lectures integrated with practical scenarios, skills practice sessions, case studies, role-playing and simulated rescues. Attendance is required for all scheduled classes. Scenarios, and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside. Please bring outdoor clothing appropriate for laying on the potentially wet, muddy or snowy, cold ground playing the role of both rescuer and patient.  Frequently stage (moulage) blood and make-up will be used to emphasize the reality of a scenario. Generally the classroom environment lends itself to a pair of comfy shoes/slipper and a crazy creek-type chair.

You will need: a large day pack with multiple layers, water bottle, waterproof tops and bottoms, sturdy boots, head lamp or flashlight and a watch with a second hand. A 4-hour evening, outdoor mock rescue is part of the curriculum, so please dress accordingly.

The course is pre-approved for three (3) semester hour credits through the University of Utah at a cost of $200.00.  If interested, please check with the instructors on the first day of class for the necessary information.

WMI is proud to be a Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) accredited organization. Current EMTs are eligible to receive 70 CEU hours for their Wilderness First Responder courses. Please bring a photocopy of your current EMT card(s) with you to your course.

More information on course material can be found at the WMI website.

Wilderness First Responder Re-Certification Course

The WFR recertification course will take place from January 22nd to January 24th, 2010. This three-day, 24-hour course, serves as a recertification for the WFR certification. The cost of the course is $250.

COURSE INFORMATION: Are your wilderness medicine protocols on the tip of your tongue or in the bottom of your pack? Join the leader in wilderness medicine for a three-day scenario-based course to review and practice evacuation and decision making guidelines. Our dynamic, experienced instructors will refresh you on the current techniques, protocols and controversies in the wilderness medicine field. You'll have opportunities to ask questions based on your real life experiences and practice scenarios and case studies that will challenge you. The WFR Recertification course also includes Adult/child CPR. This course is the most popular recertification program in Wilderness Medicine and is ideal for current Wilderness First Responders and Wildereness EMTs. The WFR Recertification course is pre-approved for 18 hours of EMT CEU's by CECBEMS.

RECERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: If you hold a current Wilderness First Responder certification of at least 72 hours, you will receive a WMI WFR certification upon successful completion of your WFR Recert course. If you hold a valid WFR certification from WMI, we ask you to bring your certification card so that the instructor can verify your expiration date. Students  holding a current WFR certification from any other organization are REQUIRED to submit a photocopy of their certification card on the first day of the course. If you hold a current WFR certification from any other wilderness medicine organization with less than a 72 certification, you will receive a letter of course completion in lieu of a WMI WFR certification. This letter of completion may allow you to recertify with your original certifying organization. You must contact that organization prior to your WMI course to ensure that our course will meet their requirements for recertification.

All students are required to submit a photocopy of their WFR certification card on the first day of the course.

There is a one-year grace period for recertification of WMI cards.  (Keep in mind that your certification is not current during this grace period and therefore you can not work as a Wilderness First Responder.)
