Hopkins Outdoor Leadership Training

Interested in taking wilderness experience to the next level and teaching others how to enjoy the outdoors? Hopkins Outdoor Leadership Training (HOLT) can show you how. Think you have what it takes, apply to be an Outdoors leader!

Apply to be an Outdoor Pursuits or Pre-Orientation Instructor by filling out the Outdoor Instructor Application. We accept applications all year, but prefer to receive them by mid-October. Also, all instructors are required to have at least one speciality: canoeing, caving, climbing, backpacking, fly fishing, mountain biking, sailing, sea kayaking, or white water kayaking. If your interested in something that's not here it is also a possibility that we can develop a new aspect of our Outdoor program so let us know what outdoor activities you're into.

To become an Outdoor Pursuits or Pre-Orientation Instructor you must do the following:

1. Apply and be accepted into the program.
2. Begin apprenticing on trips.
3. Attend 3 meetings a semester.
4. Attend a weekend training trip during the fall for your speciality and a soft-skills training seminar in the spring.
5. Pass the van certification held by the university
6. Successfully complete the ten day Hopkins Outdoor Leadership Training: Instructors Course (HOLT:IC)
7. Become certified as a Wilderness First Responder (offered here at JHU during intersession)
8. Assistant instruct until qualified to become a lead instructor

Whew! It is a lot to ask, but it is well worth it. We have very high expectations for our Outdoor instructors because they take on a tremendous responsibility. Few other positions offer you such a fun, demanding  yet rewarding challenge. Outdoor instructors not only learn hard core survival and technical skills, they also acquire lifetime leadership skills like judgment, decision making, communication and group facilitation. It may be a great resume builder, but it also will be one of the greatest experiences of your college career!
