Safety Training

Welcome to the Johns Hopkins University, O’Connor Recreation Center Aquatic Safety Training & Leadership School. Johns Hopkins Recreational Services is proud to make available to you these specialized training programs. The School offers courses from the American Red Cross as well as other prominent professional organizations to help you become prepared as an aquatic professional.

  • Registration will close three business days before each class is to begin
  • American Red Cross certification cards are usually available two weeks after class completion.
  • Cancellation Policy - Refunds will be issued when the Department cancels classes.
  • All other refunds will be handled on an individual basis in accordance with the Departmental Refund Policy.
  • Registrants understand, accept, and assume upon themselves the inherent risk involved in participation in the Safety Training and Leadership School

Lifeguard Training                                                      

The Lifeguard Training (LGT) course provides the skills and knowledge needed to becoome a lifeguard in a non-srufing environment. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive American Red Cross certificates in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AEd for the Professional Rescuer. Prerequisites: Minimum age 15 by course completion. Swim Pre-Test on the first day: Swim 300 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, surface dive and recover a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 foot depth, and swim 20 yards while carrying the brick.

Lifeguard Training Recertification

A quick way to RENEW your American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification. Participants should come prepared to demonstrate their practical skills. Some review of skills will be offered, but this course is not designed to teach or re-teach skills. Participants must the pre-course swim exam, the skills check and written exam to obtain certification. This class includes certification in CPRO w/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguard Training.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer         

The CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (CPRO) course is designed for people who have job-related duty to respond in an emergency. The class will prepare participants to make appropriate decisions about the care to provide in an emergency situation.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Recertification

Adult CPR with AED

The Adult CPR class gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing emergencies, perform CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

First Aid

The First Aid class prepares citizen responders to make appropriate decisions about the care to provide in an emergency. Skills include: bleeding control, immobilization of injuries to bones and joints, and care of sudden illness.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) (30 Hrs)

Train Instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue course, six levels of the Learn to Swim and Parent and Child Aquatics.

Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 16 years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course:
  • Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) certificate issued within the past 12 months or have a current Health and Safety Services instructor Authorization issued within the past 12 months; and
  • Successfully complete the precourse session

JHU Students $ 200/JHU Employees/Community $250

Thursday, May 28,  5-10pm – Prerequisite Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) Course
May 30, 31 & June 6, 7, 10am-6pm, Saturdays & Sundays (Attendance at all dates required)
