Undergraduate Program

Public Health spans several disciplines dedicated to the improvement of the health and well-being of populations across the globe. This mission broadly focuses on the prevention of illness, disease and health care inequalities. The pursuit of social justice underlies this goal. Core disciplines include epidemiology, environmental health sciences, health policy and management, and biostatistics. These disciplines draw on a fundamental knowledge of biology, a basic familiarity with social sciences and an appreciation of socio-economic and cultural variance among different peoples.

A Public Health studies major gives undergraduates a unique opportunity to enter into the world of public health. The major offers a flexible, challenging and contemporary curriculum combining undergraduate core courses with graduate work at the world's leading public health school - the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Public Health Majors can choose either a natural sciences or social science focus. The natural science track includes all the pre-med requirements. The social science track works for undergraduates interested in health policy, finance, ethics, law, environmental issues, and more.

PHS majors take four public health core requirements in epidemiology, environmental health, health policy and management, and biostatistics. These classes are taught at Homewood by JHSPH faculty. PHS majors take them, along with their other major requirements during their first three years at Homewood. As seniors, all PHS majors take at least a semester's worth of graduate courses at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Many of the other students in these classes have advanced degrees and significant field experiences as working public health professionals. Classes at JHSPH provide a powerful capstone experience and an authentic introduction to graduate level study.

The interdepartmental undergraduate Public Health Studies major falls within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and includes two degree programs: (1) a four-year BA program based primarily on coursework, and (2) a five-year BA-MHS program involving additional coursework and a year-long intensive graduate school experience. The BA program is open to all Public Health Studies majors. Admission to the BA-MHS program is selective, and open to students who apply JHSPH and are accepted.

The Public Health Studies programs are designed to provide rigorous preparation for advanced study in public health, law, medicine, and related fields. The programs are tailored not only for students planning to enter MHS/MPH and Ph.D. programs but also for premedical and prelaw students.
