BA-MHS Program

The BA-MHS programs are coordinated academic programs for talented undergraduate Public Health Studies majors who intend to pursue a Master's degree in the School of Public Health.  Students may apply a number of credits from graduate level PH coursework, taken interdivisionally as an undergraduate, to the Master's degree.

Currently the BA-MHS program is offered through Environmental Health Sciences and Mental Health. Several other departments are exploring this opportunity and it is expected that the number of available programs will increase over the next 2 years.

The following principles apply to the MHS and ScM degree programs that provide advising, course selection and credit efficiencies to Public Health Studies undergraduates. Other undergraduates are, of course, welcome to apply to master's programs in the School; however, these principles apply only to undergraduate Public Health Studies majors who seek to take advantage of early identification of graduate advisor as well as possible efficiencies in completing one of the master's programs offered by the School of Public Health.

Principles:

  • The student must be an undergraduate majoring in Public Health Studies at Johns Hopkins.
  •  A student must apply to the master's degree program before completing the Hopkins BA degree, preferably during their junior year, or within the first month of their senior year. As soon as a student is admitted to the master's degree program, the program will assign a graduate advisor to work with the student while the undergraduate degree is being completed.
  • A student must complete all undergraduate degree requirements before matriculating as a master's student.
  • Program requirements for the MHS or ScM degrees for undergraduates are the same as requirements for other master's students.
  • The master's degree program must state a priori the degree to which any graduate level PH courses taken as an undergraduate will also apply to graduate level credits taken as a master's student. Up to one half of the PH graduate credits earned interdivisionally toward the BA may also apply to the master degree. (This is the equivalent of no more than 16 credits, which is one full-time term of graduate level study in the School of Public Health.) The master's degree program must also state a prior whether the master's degree program will require fewer than 64 credits taken as a matriculated student.
  • The master's degree program must state a priori the length and timing of internships. The length must be consistent with the internships completed by other students in the program.
  • For professional MHS programs, the master's degree program must articulate how the students will meet the required public health "cores" in epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, behavioral/social science and environmental health. In particular, the master degree program must determine whether the undergraduate courses in these areas will meet the "core" or whether more advanced courses in each area is required. This will necessarily involve close communication with the departments and faculty offering the required undergraduate courses.

In addition to the above information, the following will be provided to the Committee on Academic standards as part of its review: sample curricula; timing of internships; and, for professional MHS programs, a list of courses that will satisfy the public health core.
