Intersession Clinical Rotations

DOWNLOAD 2010 CLINICAL ROTATION APPLICATION

DOWNLOAD 2010 CLINICAL ROTATION GUIDELINES

During Intersession, the Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising, in conjunction with the staffs of Johns Hopkins Hospital and Union Memorial Hospital, offers a variety of clinical rotations.  These rotations are full-time, non-credit experiences, and are directed to students applying to health professions school with the intent of enhancing their exposure to medicine and their understanding of their motivations for seeking entry to the field.

**Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply but 2011 applicants will be given priority in the selection process for the clinical rotations.**

There are two categories of intersession experiences:

        I.            Clinical Rotations--Surgical:  Physicians at Johns Hopkins Hospital coordinate three distinct clinical rotations in the areas of (a) anesthesia, (b) cardiothoracic surgery, and (c) general surgery.  These programs are held from January 4-15, 2010.  Students need to commit to the entire two weeks.

Anesthesia

The Department of Anesthesia at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will host Hopkins undergraduate pre-medical students during Intersession.  This non-credit program will include observation in operating rooms and critical care units as well as experiences in cardiovascular and respiratory physiology.  The dates of this rotation are January 4-15, 2010.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Cardiac Surgery Division at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will host Hopkins undergraduate pre-medical students during Intersession.  Participants in this non-credit program will observe clinical interactions and surgeries, attend rounds and conferences, and discuss basic principles of medicine with faculty, residents, and medical students.  The dates of this rotation are January 4-15, 2010.

General Surgery

The Surgery Division at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will host Hopkins undergraduate pre-medical students during Intersession.  Participants in this non-credit program will observe clinical interactions and surgeries, attend rounds and conferences, and discuss basic principles of medicine with faculty, residents, and medical students. The dates of this rotation are January 4-15, 2010.

II.            Clinical Rotations--Master Clinician:  Physicians at Union Memorial Hospital coordinate week-long experiences exploring the essential features of effective physician-patient communication. These rotations last for one week, either January 4-8 or January 11-15, 2010.  (You are only assigned to one week, not both.)

This is a one-week course designed to introduce health professions students to the dynamics of physician/patient communication by observing master clinicians interacting with their patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Union Memorial Hospital.  Students considering medical careers will have the opportunity to observe senior attending physicians, residents, nurses, medical students and other healthcare professionals interacting with patients in the outpatient facilities of the hospitals.  The goal for this non-credit experience is to understand the fundamentals of doctor-patient communication.  Any medical facts gleaned will be coincidental to the main intention of learning how physicians communicate with those in need.  Each student will observe 8 different mentors in a clinical interaction for a ½ day with each mentor, over the first four days of a week.  On the final day of the week there will be a ½ day conference to review the observations and to begin a discussion of the components of professionalism.  The dates of these rotations are either January 4-8 or January 11-15, 2010.
