Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program

Student Profiles: James Harrison

James Harrison“I came to Hopkins for three reasons: first, the program offers incredible guidance and support.  The advising team is knowledgeable and seasoned.  In preparing my application, I worked through countless drafts with the director and I am confident I submitted the strongest application I was able to because of her help.  Second, the premedical courses at Hopkins are rigorous and in-depth.  I knew the classes I took would prepare me well for medical school and the MCAT.  Finally, Hopkins offers opportunities at one of the best hospitals in the country.  With the hospital nearby, there would be plenty of opportunities to participate in top-rate research and clinical experiences.  I spent the year writing a chapter on eating disorders with a psychiatrist at the hospital. This experience gave me the opportunity to work closely with and learn from a physician-scientist, giving me insight into the world of academic medicine.”

James Harrison grew up in Utah, where he enjoyed the mountains and snow.  Inspired by their Great Books curriculum, James attended St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, where he graduated with his BA in liberal arts. During college he participated in biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins, and spent a summer working with children with critical illnesses at one of Paul Newman's "Hole In the Wall" camps.  After graduation, he spent a year teaching English to primary school children in France and another year assisting people with disabilities find employment.  During his post-bac year, James completed a tutorial in the Department of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  James is a student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
