Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program

Medical Experience

Tutorials and Volunteering

As part of the program, students enroll in a medical tutorial of their choice at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  Paired with a faculty member, students engage in cutting-edge research or clinical work in an area of interest.  This work expands students’ exposure to issues within medicine and provides an exciting framework in which to engage in science.

In addition, students avail themselves of the many opportunities to volunteer in medical clinics within the city of Baltimore.  There is an extensive list of sites maintained by the post-bac program office and we encourage students to get involved in the surrounding community to learn more about the needs in the immediate vicinity and to be of service.  These experiences also serve to enrich students’ time in Baltimore and help to educate them about medical issues in urban populations.

Introduction to Clinical Medicine

The “Introduction to Clinical Medicine” course, designed exclusively for post-bacs, aims to educate students regarding basic clinical issues within medicine, providing a framework from which to start medical school more prepared and informed.  Taught by a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, lectures are based upon clinical symptoms and the class incorporates questions similar to those students will encounter on the MCAT.  In addition, the class includes clinical cases related to the physiological symptoms, synthesizing both science and its practical application to better educate students.

Special Events

In addition to weekly post-bac group meetings with the director, there are a series of workshops and activities for premedical students that feature:

  • Guest speakers from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine;
  • Visiting speakers on topics related to medicine;
  • Medical school admissions deans;
  • Physicians practicing in a variety of specialties.

Program topics addressed in group meetings include the medical school admissions process, how to select medical schools, preparing applications, interviewing, financial aid, and guidance for students who may be interested in public health or joint degree programs.  Individual mock interviews are also offered to prepare students for their medical school interviews and expert guidance is given in the writing of the personal statement essay for the AMCAS application.
