Information for Parents and Families

While the dates have been changed, this is general information based on LAST YEAR'S schedule. This information, while most likely accurate, may change over the summer. Students' specific move-in date will not be detemined until they receive their room assignment in mid to late July.
Parents Sneak Peek of "Student To Do List"
The Student Portal is an extensive online checklist designed to acquaint new students with the necessary forms and procedures that must be completed before matriculation into the university. Incoming freshman can access the portal using their JHED credentials by following the link provided here. 

For parents, a carbon copy of your student's online portal may be found here. If you haven’t already, now would be an opportune time to start a dialogue with your student to monitor their progress with items listed on their online portal.

Please encourage your student to consistently visit his or her Student Portal as information is updated on a regular basis. Should you have further questions regarding specific portal items, please contact the appropriate office(s) with the "HELP" e-mail button or contact our office.

What Orientation events should parents plan to attend?
The Orientation program offers programming for parents during the two days of Freshman Move-In. While the final Orientation schedule will not be available until mid-August, parents may plan on the following:

Wednesday, August 29, 2012
10 AM - 3 PM - Parents Welcome Reception (various student services offices will be on site to answer questions)
2 PM - 5 PM - Parents Informational Sessions (three sessions; repeated on Thu)

Thursday, August 30, 2012
9 AM - 3 PM - Parents Welcome Reception (same as previous day)
10:30 AM - Noon - Parents Meeting (Campus Safety, Alcohol)
Noon - 3 PM - Parents Informational Session (same as previous day)
2 PM - 3 PM - Parents Meeting (Student Disability Services)
2 PM - 3 PM - International Parents Reception
3 PM - 6 PM - Parents Assembly (meet JHU President Ron Daniels and deans)
6 PM - 8 PM - Farewell Dinner w/ your student (opportunity to take your student out to dinner before you leave)

Please understand that this is a general schedule of events. Exact information about sessions and programs will not be finalized until mid-August. However, you may plan on bulk of parents programming to occur between 9 AM and 8 PM on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Please note that programming offered on Wednesday, August 29 will be repeated the next day so parents will not miss anything.

Area Hotels
The JHU Orientation staff is currently working with area hotels to provide blocks of rooms for parents wanting to stay overnight. As hotel blocks are added information will be available here.

Student Banking
There are three banks with branches within immediate walking distance of the Homewood campus. Each will be available at the Parents Reception to answer questions about opening accounts.
