Starting in late July, the Office of Undergraduate Orientation will be contacting all incoming students through a weekly newsletter called JBlast. Each letter will contain essential information regarding Orientation concerns (move-in procedures, peer ambassador information, etc). The following list is a tenative schedule of future JBlast updates: - Monday July 19th: Orientation Online Resources
- Wednesday August 4th: Peer Programming Information
- Tuesday August 17th: Tenative Orientation Week Schedule
- Monday August 23th: Final Thoughts and Reminders
For whatever reason, if you are unable to receive these updates through our automated email system, each letter will be posted here on its scheduled day of release. Dear New Student, Let us be among the many to congratulate and welcome you to the Johns Hopkins University. The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to the various resources made available to you by the Office of Undergraduate Orientation. The Orientation Staff has been working hard to create an online experience that fosters ease of use and information exchange while encouraging a dialogue between new and current JHU students. The current platform is composed of four different but equally important parts: (1) My Student Portal - Please make sure to visit your student portal at my.jhu.edu. There you’ll find a To Do List which includes necessary forms and procedures which must be completed by all new students. (2) The Orientation Homepage – The Orientation Homepage can be found at web.jhu.edu/orientation. Not only will you find the most up-to-date information, but here you will be able to register for undergraduate orientation. Registration is simple and required for all incoming students. During registration, you will have the option to purchase the Orientation Pass, an exclusive multi-day trip to Baltimore’s famous Inner Harbor. Not only will you be able to visit some of the best sites that Baltimore has to offer, but this will be your first chance to meet your new classmates and future friends. (3) The JSpace! Resource - In an effort to promote and fulfill its environmentally conscious agenda, the Office of Undergraduate Orientation has opted to discontinue paper mailings to all new students. Instead, these documents will be made available on the JSpace! in electronic format. The JSpace! can be found at web.jhu.edu/orientation/jspace.html. On the JSpace! you’ll find all essential documentation regarding Orientation events and policies. It is necessary that you visit this site often and review all its material; to aid you in this process, we’ve included a checklist (see JBlast #2) of all the important information you will find on the JSpace. (4) The Orientation Blogosphere - To encourage a dialogue between the O-Staff and future JHU students, we've created the Orientation Blogosphere. Here’s a place where you’ll find topics ranging from the best places to eat in Baltimore to the various programs Johns Hopkins offers to those pursuing premedical studies. The information contained there represents the wisdom of senior Johns Hopkins students and faculty. It is, in some sense, to your advantage to learn as much as you can so that once you arrive on campus, you’ll spend less time learning about a foreign place and more time involved in your research, student groups, etc. The Orientation Executive Staff has been busy planning the exciting week during which you will begin your college experience. We have selected “JHyou” as the theme for Orientation 2009. As you begin your college career, you will be faced with many new challenges and decisions. We hope that you will take the time to make your experience all about you. The Orientation Executive Staff will be here to make this transition proceed smoothly and prepare you for the wealth of opportunities that will be presented before you. If you do have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail us at orientation@jhu.edu. We are anxiously awaiting your arrival. See you during Orientation! Dear New Student, Welcome yet again to another edition of JHU Orientation’s weekly newsletter JBlast. This week’s topic of discussion concerns Peer Programming. Your Peer Ambassador is an upperclassman who has volunteered their time and energy to advise you and a group of approximately 15 other incoming students throughout the Orientation Week. Because each new student is assigned to a specific advising group, it is essential that you become acquainted with your Peer Ambassador prior to arriving on campus.
Dear New Student,
If you’ve recently visited the Orientation Homepage, you will have discovered that last year’s schedule is available. Please take a moment and familiarize yourself with all the events of Orientation by looking through this comprehensive agenda. These first days are crammed with assemblies, meetings, trips, discussions, and performances. Don’t be intimidated; remember to take chances and experience a taste of everything Hopkins has to offer. Your participation and involvement in the Orientation program will help to ease your transition into a new city, prepare you for the academic challenges on the horizon, and build your sense of community with your new classmates. One last item: Orientation Week is a little more than one week from now... are you excited yet?
