The Institute of the History of Medicine was the first university department of the history of medicine in the United States, pioneering graduate education and research in the history of medicine and public health since 1929. It remains the administrative home of the Bulletin of the History of Medicine and the historical collection described below.

Located in the William H. Welch Medical Library, the Institute maintains a large historical collection with an extensive section of secondary and supporting works. The Alan M. Chesney Archives of The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions has major manuscript collections of medicine at Hopkins, thus making it an important center for the history of 20th century medical education and research.

The Eisenhower Library and the Welch Medical Library contain about two million volumes, including the special collections of the Institute of the History of Medicine. These research facilities are supplemented by the rare book holdings at Evergreen House, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and the George Peabody Library.

The Johns Hopkins University is centrally located within easy commuting distance of Washington and Philadelphia. In Washington, the holdings of the Library of Congress, the National Library of Medicine , the National Archives, and the Smithsonian Institution are available to the research student. The Washington-Baltimore area is especially rich in rare book and manuscript collections for the history of modern science and medicine. In addition to the Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine collections, both the Dibner Institute and the Folger Library specialize in this area. The Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware holds the Winterthur collections in the history of American science and technology; in Philadelphia, the resources of the Beckman Center for History of Chemistry, the American Philosophical Society, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Academy of Natural Sciences are also available for research.
