Undergraduate Programs

The Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures offers courses of study at the undergraduate level in the languages, cultures, and literatures of France and the francophone world, Germany, Italy, Latin America, Portugal, and Spain.  Depending on their prior experience with the language and the results of their placement exam, students can enroll in language courses ranging from Elements through Advanced.  We also afford undergraduate students the unique opportunity of enrolling in courses such as Business French or Medical Spanish, among others.  Our culture courses encompass topics such as theater, art, cinema, dance, and television of the country or region of study.

Majors and Minors

The Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures offers majors in French literatureGerman literature, Italian literature, Spanish/Latin American literatures , and Romance Languages (which allows the student to concentrate in 2 or 3 Romance literatures offered by the department).  Each major requires that the student be proficient in the language of the major area and then take a series of courses in the culture and literature of the region.  Students work closely with faculty advisors on their course of study within the Department as well as on University requirements outside of the Department. Highly qulaified German majors have the opportunity to pursue the German B.A./M.A degree or German Honors Program options.

The Department also offers a series of minor concentrations:

            French Literature

            French Cultural Studies

            German

            Italian

            Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture

            Spanish for the Professions

Students interested in declaring a major, second major, or minor in the Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures must complete the necessary paperwork at the Office of Academic Advising AND see the Advising Coordinator in the Departments administrative office.
