Placement and Preregistration into the JHU German Language Courses -- Information and Procedures If you have taken German in high school, it is highly recommended that you continue gaining proficiency in German at JHU. Placement Any student with prior knowledge of German MUST take the German Department's Placement Exam in order to continue language study in the Johns Hopkins German program. Further Information on Placement Testing is available at Academic Advising: http://www.jhu.edu/~advising The German Placement Test (G-CAPE) is a computerized test and is administered at the Language Lab during Orientation and on a rolling basis thereafter. Students should schedule 1 hour for the test. Fall 2007: German Placement Test (G-Cape) Tuesday, September 4, 2007 from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 2 -4 pm Wednesday, September 5, 2007 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Language Lab -- 506 Krieger Hall Preregistration The general guidelines below will help you make your initial selection of the appropriate course. When you arrive as a freshman, you will have the opportunity to review your selection with one of the coordinators in the department. Bring your test result to Gilman 239 for approval. If you have little or no German instruction and have not spent time (2 months+) in a German-speaking country... | preregister for 091.101 German Elements I (both semesters must be completed to receive credit) | If you have had 1-2 years of German instruction in high school or you have spent time in a German-speaking country | preregister for 091.101 German Elements I and take the Placement Exam. Adjustments can be made after consultation | If you have 3 years of German instruction or have spent 1 year in a German-speaking country | preregister for 091.201 Intermediate German, and take the Placement Exam | If you have 4 or more years of German instruction or have spent 1+ years in a German-speaking country | preregister for 091-301 Advanced German, and take the Placement Exam |
Once you receive a score on the G-CAPE, you must meet with the Coordinator of the German Language Program, Deborah McGee Mifflin in Gilman Hall 239. Your score will be interpreted and you will receive your enrollment recommendation. Exception - AP Exam If you have taken the AP Exam in German and received a score of 4 or 5, you will automatically receive 6 academic credits and the first year of German language courses will be waived. However, you will need to consult with the Language Coordinator to review your enrollment choices beyond the elementary level.
