The Department is comprised of faculty and coordinators dedicated to teaching and research in the languages and literatures of the French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese-speaking worlds. The missions of the Department are two-fold: proficiency in these languages and development of a greater understanding of the literatures of these regions of the world. The Department prides itself on small classes we believe that limited enrollment allows for increased participation and a better faculty-student relationship. Each semester, we invite several visiting faculty members to offer courses to undergraduate and graduate students. These visiting faculty return frequently and become deeply involved with the studies of our students, often becoming their advisors.
We encourage all students (undergraduate and graduate) to study and conduct research abroad. We currently have programs in France, Germany and Spain The Department offers majors in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Romance Languages. We have minors in French Literature, French Cultural Studies, German, Italian, Spanish for the Professions, and Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture. We offer graduate programs (Ph.D. only) in French literature, German Literature, Italian literature, and Spanish/Latin American literature. While we offer courses in the Portuguese language and Portuguese and Brazilian cultures and literatures, we do not yet have a major, minor, or graduate program in that language area.
