STUDY ABROAD

The Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures strongly encourages all of its students to take part in a study abroad program during their course of study at JHU.  Not only does the student strengthen existing foreign language skills while abroad, but they also experience the everyday life and culture of their "home away from home" - learning things that cannot be taught in the classroom.  

The Department offers it own undergraduate programs in France (Paris), Germany (Berlin) and in Spain (Madrid). Students interested these programs can contact:

Important:  As of September 1st, 2006, the Department will no longer accept transfer credit towards a language major or minor from non-JHU study abroad programs in countries where we run our own programs.

Academic Advising forms:  All undergraduate students who are accepted onto our study abroad programs must also complete the necessary study abroad paperwork with the Office of Academic Advising. Students should contact Dr. Ruth Aranow for details.

Transfer of credit from non-JHU French study abroad programs:

Students wishing to bring back language department-related credit from non-JHU study abroad programs in France MUST have their chosen program and courses pre-approved by a member of the Department of German & Romance Languages before they depart for France.  Further details:

1) Students majoring in French:
Please approach either Prof Stephen Nichols or Prof Elena Russo with details of your desired study abroad program & proposed courses for their approval.

2) Students minoring in French Literature:
Please approach either Prof Stephen Nichols or Prof Elena Russo with details of your desired study abroad program & proposed courses for their approval.

3) Students minoring in French Cultural Studies:
Please approach  Claude Guillemard with details of your desired program & proposed courses for her approval.

4) Students wishing to transfer back credit from language courses:
Please approach  Claude Guillemard with details of your desired program & proposed courses for her approval.  You will be required to take the Departmental Placement Test on your return to Hopkins as part of the requirements for transfering the credit.

Study abroad in Germany:

Johns Hopkins participates, together with five other universities, in the Berlin Consortium for German Studies. This program is open to students from all fields of study who meet the following qualifications: at least sophomore standing, two years of college-level German or the equivalent, and a minimum average of B in all course work. The program includes intense preparation in the German language and culture, participation in the course offerings of the Free University of Berlin as well as other Berlin universities, tutoring, and advisement. Students interested in this program should contact the chair of the Department of German as early in their studies at Hopkins as possible.

Graduate Students 

Graduate students in the Department are expected to study and conduct research abroad while in the program.  Generally, study abroad occurs after 2-3 years of coursework in Baltimore.  The Department has exchange programs with ENS Ulm and Lyon as well as with the University of Geneva.  Fellowship funding continues while the student is abroad.
