Portuguese Section: An Overview

"Nothing is real in life which is not real simply because it is well written" (Nada há de real na vida que o não seja pelo simples facto que foi bem escrito): such was the belief of the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. In the Portuguese section, we also believe nothing replaces the quest for the exact word, a profound knowledge and appreciation for the beauty of the Portuguese language. The study of Portuguese gives you access to the diverse cultural and literary worlds of Portugal, Brazil and the Portuguese-speaking African countries. The Portuguese section at the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures offers not only the required language courses at different levels, but also a growing number of other courses on classical and modern literatures, cultural history, and contemporary Portugal and Brazil. Through the participation of visiting faculty, the Portuguese section is connected to some innovative areas of research and intellectual creation in both countries, with a special emphasis on literary theory, philosophy, and cultural history.

Portuguese Language Program

The Portuguese Language Program offers undergraduate courses in elementary, intermediate, advanced Portuguese, and Portuguese conversation, as well as a course in Brazilian culture and civilization. The language courses aim at proficiency in both oral and written communication.

Throughout all levels, exposure to the culture of Portuguese speaking countries is incorporated with language learning through a variety of multimedia materials and selected readings from Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese Africa. Interested students are encouraged to study abroad during their junior year and to participate in other international programs.

Courses of Study

Currently, we do not offer a major, minor, or graduate program in the language or literatures of the Lusophone world.  Students interested in pursuing Portuguese as a language of concentration should speak with the Academic Coordinator for details.
