The German Section of the Johns Hopkins University is small but intensely active and well known department. Its very smallness assures close contact between students and faculty and very individualized advising. We have been a leading force in contemporary literary criticism and it is recognized for its strength not only in German literature from the baroque to contemporary literature, but also for its interdisciplinary offerings at the intersection of literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis and cultural studies. In addition to our own distinguished faculty, the section has regular visitors from European universities offering seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The German language program includes a wide range of courses from introductory language to advanced conversation and composition courses as well as courses focused on cultural topics, business, and the language of science. As a further incentive for the language program, the department participates with four other major universities on the East Coast in the Berlin Consortium, allowing undergraduates to spend a semester or a full year in Berlin.
