Profile:

DEBORAH MCGEE MIFFLIN joined the JHU German Department faculty in the Fall of 1999 as the Language Coordinator of the German Language Program at Johns Hopkins University. After two years of study at the Universität Hamburg in the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Mifflin received her B.A. and M.A. from Temple University in Philadelphia in German Language and Literature and has completed advanced graduate study in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition in German at Georgetown University. Her interest in contemporary German culture and classroom instruction is reflected in her recent co-authored text book publication Was ist deutsch?

As part of her responsibilities as Teaching Assistant Supervisor, Ms. Mifflin offers a pedagogy seminar in the Spring semester that addresses the theory and practice of adult foreign language learning and teaching. Her major areas of interest are second language acquisition, foreign language pedagogy, classroom interaction and L2 oral production.

Ms. Mifflin teaches a variety of courses in the undergraduate language program from beginning to advanced. She is also undergraduate advisor and works collaboratively with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department to ensure a smooth running program for minors and majors. In addition, Ms. Mifflin is the current study abroad advisor, including the Berlin Consortium, JHU’s undergraduate study abroad program at the Freie Universität in Berlin.

Ms. Mifflin was a recipient of a 2003 Technology Fellow Grant to develop websites for vocabulary review; a finalist for the 2004 JHU Teaching Award; and is currently working on a pilot study abroad program in Germany for Engineers and International Business Students under a joint grant from DAAD and Kenan. She is an engaged member of the profession and actively involved in the professional development of foreign language teachers. She presents regularly at conferences both locally and nationally. Currently, Ms. Mifflin is serving as the President of the Maryland chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG).
