Mary Miglio Bensabat-Ott Director, Portuguese Language Program Romance Languages and Literatures Telephone: 410.516.6738 Mary Miglio Bensabat-Ott, who has been a Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University since 1991, is presently Director of the Portuguese Language Program. She teaches Portuguese Elements, Intermediate and Advanced Portuguese, and Brazilian Culture and Civilization. From 1993 to 1994, she was Assistant Director of the Latin American Studies Program. She has led two groups of Hopkins undergraduates on a two-week intersession trip to Brazil, the first in January 1998 and the second in January 2004. Before coming to Hopkins, Dr. Bensabat-Ott taught Portuguese language as well as courses in Luso-Brazilian theater and culture for 12 years at the Georgetown University School of Languages and Linguistics and the School for Summer and Continuing Education. She has also taught at the University of Maryland at College Park. Before moving to the United States, she taught English at a number of schools in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including the historic Colegio Pedro II, founded by the last emperor of Brazil in the 19th Century. She also lived in Saudi Arabia for six years, and has traveled extensively on six continents. Dr. Bensabat-Ott received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from Georgetown University, where she also received a M.S. degree in Portuguese. She has a B.A. and Licenciada from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in Anglo-Germanic Languages and Literatures, and did postgraduate studies at the University of Lisbon (Portugal) in Portuguese Literature and Luso-African Studies. Dr. Bensabat-Ott has been a consultant to the John Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, and Project Hope. In addition, she provided assistance to author Mark London in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture during preparation of his book, Amazon. Her manuscript "Orality and Literacy in Brazilian and American Storytelling: a Comparative Study", was incorporated in "Introducing Constructed Dialogue in Greek and American Conversational and Literary Narrative" by Deborah Tannen in Reported Speech Across Languages, edited by Florian Coulmas. PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM - The Portuguese Language Program offers undergraduate courses in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Portuguese, as well as a course in Brazilian culture and civilization. The language courses aim at proficiency in both oral and written communication. Throughout all levels, exposure to the culture and literature of Portuguese speaking countries is incorporated with language learning though a variety of multimedia materials and selected readings from Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese Africa. Interested students are encouraged to study abroad during their junior year and to participate in other international programs. |
