The Johns Hopkins University offers many opportunities for its neighbors and others to engage with the institution (please see the “Access to JHU” link on the sidebar). For question, concerns, and comments regarding the Johns Hopkins University and the neighborhoods surrounding its Baltimore City campuses, please contact: Salem Reiner Director Office of Community Affairs The Johns Hopkins University 901 S. Bond Street, Suite 540 Baltimore, MD 21231 E-Mail: commrelations@jhu.edu Phone: 443-287-9900 Fax: 443-287-9898 JHU students independently determine which volunteer projects they will support, and, given that there are more requests for student volunteers than can be accommodated (despite 70,000+ hours of community service annually), the students are unable to respond positively to all requests for volunteers. Most of JHU’s student volunteer projects follow the approach employed by the university’s Center for Social Concern, which emphasizes the value of service with others, rather than the commonly accepted concept of service to others. The volunteer and client enter into an educational process where both benefit from the interaction and reciprocal learning is the common ground for all of our initiatives. Our programs and efforts are striving to create a "better community" in and around the Johns Hopkins University campuses. To request JHU student volunteers, please send a brief inquiry from your community association or the Greater Homewood Community Corp. via email or fax (443-287-9898, please include “Community Affairs” on the subject line) describing the project, the specific role of the JHU students, the desired number of students, skills needed by the students, the sponsoring organization, the project date(s) and time(s), project location, any previous engagement by the sponsoring organization with JHU within that past five years, and contact information for the principal party responsible for the project. Requests should be received at least three weeks prior to the event date. The JHU office of community affairs will distribute the request to the appropriate parties at JHU for consideration.
To submit a complaint against a JHU student in the neighborhoods surrounding the Homewood campus, please follow the reporting procedures noted below. For other students, please contact the office of the dean of students at (410) 516-8208. The Johns Hopkins University Student/Community Liaison is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and Tuesday and Wednesday days (when school is in session) to assist with problems arising between students and community members. The Student/Community Liaison position was created to assist with noise, trash and yard maintenance issues as well as to help students transition from dormitory resident to community member. For Noise Complaints: - Please call 410-516-4600 to report a current complaint. If the Student/Community Liaison is on duty, she will be dispatched to the location to meet with the offending parties and will try to alleviate the problem. If the Liaison is not on duty, Campus Safety and Security will dispatch an officer.
- If the complaint is warranted and is not alleviated on the first visit, the Dean of Students will be notified the following business day. When warranted, discipline measures through the Dean of Students' office are instituted and range from warning through probation to suspension.
- Callers may remain anonymous.
For Trash or Yard maintenance issues: - Please call 410-516-2359 or email liaison@jhu.edu to report these issues.
- Students may borrow lawn maintenance equipment and hand tools through the Student/Community Liaison's office. Students may call or email to reserve a time to use the equipment.
The Office of the Dean of Students, the Student/Community Liaison and the Office of Community Affairs would like to encourage our students and their neighbors to take the time to get to know each other. Often, issues like those above can be resolved before outside intervention is necessary.
