Profile: Lisa O'Connell specializes in eighteenth-century British literature. Her research interests include the rise of the novel, the history of sexuality and development of settler colonial cultures. She has published articles on eighteenth-century theatre, popular anthropology, travel narratives, sentimental fiction and courtesan memoirs. Her most recent publication is a co-edited collection, Libertine Enlightenment: Sex, Liberty and License in the Eighteenth Century (Palgrave). Since completing her dissertation on eighteenth-century nuptial culture at Brown University in 2000, she has held a lectureship in Literary Studies at the University of Queensland where she has taught courses on the literature of enlightenment, Gothic fiction, and contemporary literature. Her current projects include a book-length study of the role of marriage regulation in the cultures of British colonialism, a related investigation of the sexual dimension of citizenship in the reform cultures of the early nineteenth century, and an account of late Georgian elopement scandals as they linked literary and media cultures.
