"Freedom despite mechanism"

Abstract:
Many people think that advances in neuroscience will settle the question of
whether or not we have free will. I
argue that neuroscience will not be in a position to settle this question, and that suggestions that it can misunderstand both the limits
of neuroscience and the nature of questions about freedom. However, when
appropriately wedded to a philosophical picture, neuroscience can still be
informative about freedom.
