Student Responsibilities

We are committed to providing a welcoming and helpful service to JHU students with disabilities and we make every effort to respond to student requests as soon as we can.  However, it takes time to arrange for accommodations and students must allow enough time for us to make the necessary arrangements. All accommodations must first be approved based on proper documentation of a disability.

We want to stress three points:
1. Make your requests early
2. Use the online forms to make your requests
3. Monitor your voicemail and email for messages from us about your request

Here are our guidelines for how long it may take to provide accommodations from the time that the student requests them:

  • letter to instructor –  up to1 week
  • notetakers – up to 3 weeks
  • exams in our testing space – up to 1 week
  • alternate format books – up to 4 weeks
  • accessible classrooms – up to 2 weeks
  • FM/phone/internet wired classrooms – up to 4 weeks
  • Interpreters/CART – up to 2 weeks
  • captioning – up to 4 weeks

Online forms for making these requests can be downloaded from
http://web.jhu.edu/disabilities/forms.  Go to the student information tab and look for “forms.”  Complete the form and send it as an email attachment to the email address on the form.  If there is no form for the accommodation you are requesting, please send an email to studentdisabilityservices@jhu.edu and tell us what the accommodation is that you are requesting.

Check your JHU email and voicemail daily in case we are trying to contact you. If you do not reply, we will stop working on your request until you contact us again with the information we need.

Letters to Instructors:
1. If you request accommodations that require the cooperation of the course instructor, we will prepare a letter for you to give to each instructor explaining what accommodations you should receive.  Letters will be prepared for the following types of requests:  extended time on examinations; testing in a private room; interpreters; captioning; enlarged print; and any other accommodation that requires the cooperation of the instructor.  We will scan the letter and send it to you as an email attachment for you to download and print copies for your instructors.  Students are expected to meet privately with each instructor to give them a copy of the letter and to discuss how the accommodations will be provided.  See additional information below about each type of accommodation.
