Graduates Entering Commencement Ceremony

Commencement changes

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:
Johns Hopkins’ annual Commencement ceremony stands as one of the highlights of our academic year, a chance to honor and celebrate the impressive accomplishments of each class of graduates. For the past 13 years, this momentous event has been held outdoors at Homewood Field, subject to weather conditions that are too often brutally hot or, as we saw this year, unseasonably cold and rainy.
After much consideration, we have decided to move our universitywide Commencement—and several divisional ceremonies—to Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena. As a result, the 2016 universitywide ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 18, at 4 p.m. The indoor venue will provide a comfortable, climate-controlled setting that can hold as many guests as our graduates wish to invite.
Each year, we balance the connection we have to Homewood with the concern that unsafe weather conditions will force us to move our ceremony to ticketed indoor venues at the last minute, or to cancel the universitywide event after families have traveled long distances to witness a once-in-a-lifetime moment. By shifting to the arena, we will guarantee that rain doesn’t drive our guests to watch the ceremony on indoor video screens or to take cover under plastic ponchos, and that high temperatures don’t make the day uncomfortable for all and potentially dangerous for those with health conditions.
Our Commencement team is working to ensure that the traditions and festivities of our Commencement ceremony will carry over to the arena, and that all necessary logistics will be in place for a successful event. We will also invite the undergraduate class of 2016 to help us plan a new Commencement celebration event on the Homewood campus, starting a tradition that will make the occasion even more meaningful and memorable.
More information on the May 18, 2016, universitywide Commencement is available on the event website and details will be updated throughout the year. We appreciate your support of this effort and look forward to another wonderful celebration of our students’ achievements.
