Green Statement

Johns Hopkins University is committed to becoming a showpiece of environmental leadership by demonstrating smart, sensible, and creative actions that promote the vision of sustainability. The University's commitment to sustainability extends to all aspects of campus life –including commencement.

Sustainable Commencement practices include: minimizing print materials, selling and renting out caps and gowns made from 100% recycled materials, using stage decor that can be reused every year, using local caterers who specialize in green practices, publishing information on the web, using FSC certified paper for the Commencement program, webcasting the event for those who are unable to travel, switching from disposable to compostable dinnerware and switching from plastic bottles of water to biodegradable bottles of water—and having these items, along with food scraps, collected for composting.

We invite you to support our efforts to minimize waste and have as little impact on the planet as possible during Commencement by choosing a sustainable transportation found on the maps/parking page or bringing your own reusable water bottle. It is important to us that all attendees stay hydrated and healthy in the warm weather. Even though we will be providing biodegradable bottles of water, no waste is better than some waste. Bring your own bottle to reduce the amount of waste at the event and to stay hydrated. If you do not bring your own bottle, please be conscious of your waste by properly disposing of your biodegradable water bottle in one of the many bins marked “compost” on the Homewood field.
