Studies of the mental lexicon and the representation and processing of both familiar and novel words are carried out from a number of methodological perspectives by members of the Cognitive Science Department. The formal properties of the lexicon, how lexical representations are shaped by general principles of Phonology, how words are recognized and produced, how lexical representations are learned in the acquisition process, and what patterns of lexical impairment can follow from injury to the brain, these all provide mutually constraining evidence concerning the mental format of our lexical knowledge and our capacity to exploit that knowledge. This is directly reflected both in the approaches that our members take in their research on the lexical dimension of linguistic competence and performance, and in the design and organization of the graduate and undergraduate training programs. |
