As assistant provost for institutional research, Dr. Lebo coordinates research and compliance initiatives among Johns Hopkins' nine academic divisions and with leading universities across the country. She directs the longitudinal student survey research program for the university, measuring the quality and effectiveness of both undergraduate and graduate education at Johns Hopkins. She serves on and advises university committees and task forces, including the Middle States accreditation steering committee and the Faculty Budget Advisory Committee. She also works with state and federal agencies such as the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Maryland Independent Colleges and Universities, the National Center for Education Statistics, the National Science Foundation and the National Research Council. Dr. Lebo serves as university liaison to the AAU Data Exchange (AAUDE) and the Consortium for Financing Higher Education (COFHE). She is an active participant in these data exchanges, helping to establish and align consortia activities with institutional needs. Dr. Lebo came to Johns Hopkins in 2003 to revitalize a fledgling office of institutional research and was named assistant provost of institutional research in 2006. She has more than 20 years of experience in university administration with previous appointments at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Her professional interests include enrollment modeling, the cost and affordability of higher education, and productivity in higher education. She has served in a series of national positions including the NSF Expert Panel on R&D Expenditures (2007-2008), the Higher Education Data Policy Committee (HEDPC) for the Association for Institutional Research (2007-2010), the governing council for the AAU Data Exchange (2007-2010), the Regional Leadership council of the Society for College and University Planning (1996 to 2000), and the Advisory Council to the National Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity (1995 to 1999). She has also served on a number of technical review panels including the NCES Unit Record proposal (2004) and the IPEDS Race/Ethnicity Changes (2006). Trained as an anthropologist, Dr. Lebo received her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1991. She excavated a series of pre-ceramic sites in the American Southwest, as well as sites in Brazil and Uruguay that document the earliest occupation of South America. Her research on prehistoric climate and corn agriculture in northeastern Arizona was named as the top dissertation in the country by the Society for American Archaeology. Indiana University also recognized this work as distinguished among dissertations in all subjects. She has combined a career in university administration with extensive teaching on archaeology, Native Americans, ethnic identity, and the impact of European contact in the New World.
