As vice provost for institutional equity, Ray Gillian is responsible for providing oversight for the Office of Institutional Equity and to work effectively with other university leaders in enhancing Johns Hopkins diversity and inclusion efforts.
Mr. Gillian works with the Johns Hopkins Institutions Diversity Leadership Council to implement the annual Diversity Conference, climate surveys and awards programs along with other initiatives proposed by the Council. Mr. Gillian became assistant provost and director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Programs in April 2000. The office was renamed the Office of Institutional Equity in April 2007 and Gillian was, in turn, named Vice Provost for Institutional Equity. Previously, as assistant to the president at the University of Maryland, College Park, Mr. Gillian was responsible for 16 years for developing, monitoring and implementing the university’s equity and diversity procedures. Prior to becoming assistant to the president at Maryland, he served from 1977 to 1984 as that university’s director of special student support services. Earlier, at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, he was director of minority affairs and director of the Center for Educational Opportunity, which provided services to educationally and economically disadvantaged students.
