Pamela Cranston became a vice provost in July 2006, after serving as associate provost for academic affairs from 2003 to 2006. In January 2008, Dr. Cranston was appointed to the additional position of vice dean of the Carey Business School, where she now spends the majority of her time. She had served as interim dean in 2007 while a national search was under way for the newly created school’s first dean. In her current part-time role as vice provost, Dr. Cranston provides overall coordination and support for Johns Hopkins’ international activities, promoting relationships between Johns Hopkins and universities and other institutions around the world. Specifically, her responsibilities fall into three main areas: international collaborations and partnerships; inter-divisional policies, practices, and initiatives; and promotion of international activities and outreach. Dr. Cranston coordinates the university’s International Affairs Coordinating Committee. When she was in the Office of the Provost full-time, before her Carey Business School appointment, Dr. Cranston was also involved in a broad spectrum of university-wide academic affairs. She provided key support to university-wide task forces that studied the role of the arts at the Homewood campus and reviewed university policies toward faculty, staff and graduate students who travel to high-risk areas of the world. She also provided staff support for senior leadership searches and to the Board of Trustees’ Committee on Academic Affairs. Dr. Cranston returned to Johns Hopkins in 2002 as an assistant provost to assist with the work of the Commission on Undergraduate Education. During 2003-2004, she spent much of her time coordinating the university’s preparations for its decennial accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Prior to that, she had spent nearly six years at the Association of American Medical Colleges, where she had held several positions, including associate vice president of the Division of Medical Schools Services and Studies and deputy executive director of the National Resident Matching Program. From 1987 to 1997, she was a key administrator in what was then called Johns Hopkins’ School of Continuing Studies (since divided into the Carey Business School and School of Education). As associate dean for academic services from 1995 until her departure for the AAMC in 1997, she was responsible for services such as admissions, financial aid, records and registration, advising and orientation for the school’s degree-seeking and non-credit students at five locations. Dr. Cranston earned a Ph.D. in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1987. She is a 1976 graduate of Denison University and also holds a Master of Science degree in student personnel administration from The Ohio State University. | | Vice Provost for International Programs
