James Brailer

Assistant Provost for International Student and Scholar Services

James D. Brailer joined Johns Hopkins University in April 2013 to become the university’s first Assistant Provost for International Student and Scholar Services.  Jim is leading a transformation in the way that Johns Hopkins supports its growing international populations and serves sponsoring university divisions and departments.  He is conducting a reorganization and consolidation of the five independent offices currently working with international students and scholars, as well as undertaking a comprehensive review of all international services policies and procedures at the institution.  He also works with government relations staff to ensure that policymakers at all levels appreciate the impact of current and proposed immigration regulations on Johns Hopkins.

Prior to Hopkins, Jim served as Executive Director of the Center for Global Education Services (CGES) at Arizona State University (ASU).  He joined ASU in February 2010 as the inaugural Director of the International Students and Scholars Office.  He was responsible for the overall operation of CGES, an organization serving all four university campuses which included the International Students and Scholars Office, Study Abroad Office, and the ASU U.S. Passport Acceptance Office, and worked closely with campus departments and other stakeholders to advance the international dimension of the institution.

Jim began his career in the Office of International Education at The Ohio State University and was last there as Assistant Director for International Scholars.  He has worked in the field of international education for more than 20 years and has presented numerous sessions and workshops at national and regional professional conferences.  Jim is committed to the success of all international students and scholars by providing excellent services and programming, and he possesses a depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise in relation to U.S. immigration regulations and practices.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Ohio State and a Juris Doctor degree from Capital University Law School.
