The Office of Institutional Equity and the disability services coordinators at Johns Hopkins University acknowledge the importance of confidentiality and will not release disability-related documentation or information about a student’s diagnosis without his or her informed written consent, except on a need-to-know basis or as otherwise required by law.
Documentation submitted by students for the purpose of requesting reasonable accommodations is maintained in a secure file in the office of the disability coordinator for the student’s school and in a secure location in the Office of Institutional Equity for a period of five years from the time the student graduates or leaves the university. The documentation is not part of the student’s academic transcript or official university record.
Letters or memos submitted for the purpose of informing instructors of a student’s approved accommodations are marked confidential and do not contain information about the student’s disability. Instructors should limit discussion regarding a student’s accommodations to individuals necessary to implement the accommodation.
Students may address questions about confidentiality to the Disability Services Officer in the Office of Institutional Equity at (410) 516-8949.
