The Johns Hopkins Bayview Community Relations Department handles the hospital’s relationships with neighborhood and business organizations, community outreach and partnerships, health education and fairs and health promotion programs, and collaborates with other departments in the hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine to assist them with community- and legislative-related functions (volunteers, development, public affairs, etc.). Bayview Community Affairs exists to develop and maintain strong relationships with the communities Johns Hopkins Bayview serves, to positively impact the quality of life and health of the residents within the community, to serve as the legislative liaison for the institution, to support the development of professional social work competence in community-focused practice, and to participate in community health planning in order to develop and implement programs and services to meet health needs as identified by the community. The community relations department establishes and fosters communication between Johns Hopkins Bayview and the surrounding communities. Members of the community relations staff regularly attend community meetings, actively participate on the Community Advisory Board and serve as the driving force behind the Community Health Action Project (CHAP). We operate health-related programs to meet community needs. The department has played a critical role in garnering community support for the redevelopment of the Bayview campus. The department also plays an integral part in policy development and represents the Medical Center in regard to legislative and regulatory concerns. It is the nature of our work to collaborate and partner with others to serve the community. Some examples of this work include: - Manage emergency food closet and prescription program
- Coordinate Safe Babies program and Burn Prevention Education programs
- Teach Food Re-Education for School Health (FRESH), a cardiovascular disease prevention program for elementary school grades 3 & 4
- Coordinate hospital blood drives and other resource-generating programs
- Collaborate on the Care-a-Van program with Development, Pediatrics and Ambulatory Medicine
- Provide legislative information to all other departments
- Chair and staff Hospital Policy Committee
Our staff includes five FTEs (full-time equivalents) in the Office of Community Relations, two-and-a-half in the FRESH/HEART Program, and one in the Kiwanis Burn Prevention Education.
