Founded in 1921, Theatre Hopkins (originally the Johns Hopkins Playshop) is the second-oldest theater group in Baltimore. Originally an extension of the English Department, within 10 years it became a community-based, semi-professional theater housed by the university, performing for the Johns Hopkins community, alumni and the general public. A subscription base of 700-900 ensured both financial independence and a solid base of community support.
Working with an informal ensemble of adult actors and professional technical craftsmen, and collaborating wherever possible with other Johns Hopkins entities, Theatre Hopkins pursues a mission consistent with the purpose established at its inception: to showcase distinguished pieces of dramatic literature, drawn from both the classic and contemporary repertoire.
Theatre Hopkins had occupied the Merrick Barn since the mid-1940s until in 2004 the Barn was transferred to the new undergraduate theater program. Since then, performances have taken place primarily at the Mattin Center with occasional visits to other venues on and off campus.
