James Clark, for whom Clark Hall is named, wanted to honor his mentor, Benjamin Rome, who himself supported Johns Hopkins in many ways during his lifetime. Mr. Clark requested the fabrication of a permanent exhibit that would trace Mr. Rome's career from its humble beginnings to major entrepreneurial success. Our job was to create an exhibit that was timeless and refined, well-lighted, appropriate for the space and the building, and that used to the best advantage the small amount of material we were given. Three years after the exhibit was mounted, Mr. Clark made another significant gesture to honor his mentor: He endowed the Whiting School deanship in Mr. Rome's name.
