From Hopeless to Hired: A Survival Guide to Business Etiquette and Career Management

Business etiquette goes far beyond not napping in the boardroom! It's about projecting an image of professionalism and credibility. In this course you will learn key career management skills that will help you not only find a plum job, but emerge as a leader in your field.  Come join us and you will quickly learn that common sense is not so common.

During three evenings, guest speakers will introduce topics such as effective networking, interviewing, resumes and cover letters, communication (written, verbal, and non-verbal), appropriate dress, and dining and social etiquette.  During the final evening, you are invited to dinner at the Johns Hopkins Club where you will be led by a professional etiquette instructor who will share the important details needed to impress your colleagues and get that job you’ve always wanted.

Registration begins on Monday, November 26. Students may register in the Student Development and Programming Office, Levering Union through, Friday, December 14.

All fees, including a nonrefundable $2.00 registration fee must be paid in advance.

Gain insight into trends and career opportunities in public relations and media in this new course that provides one week of class learning from Baltimore-based P.R. and media guest speakers followed by a 3-day trip to New York City to meet and network with executives from leading P.R. and media firms.

To register, you must submit your resume and completed registration form to the Career Center no later than Friday, November 16 at 12PM. Space on this trip will be generally allocated on a first-come, first served basis, however, professionalism of students’ resumes and overall GPA will factor into selection should the number of students applying exceed our limit.

A mandatory trip meeting and resume workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at 5:00PM in the Career Center Library, Garland Hall, 3rd Floor. Attendance counts towards course attendance policy. 100% attendance expected for successful completion of the course.

"Day on the Street" - Intersession Trip

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in an Investment Bank?  Are you curious about what it takes to have a successful career at a major firm?  Are you ready to take on a summer internship in the Finance industry?  If your answer is yes then this is the opportunity for you!  Intersession is the perfect time to explore careers up close and personal.

This year's Seminar in Financial Literacy course takes place from January 7 to January 25 and features lectures and guest speakers focused topics regarding the life cycle of an investment bank. The course concludes with a three day trip to New York City from January 22 to January 24, where you will visit several of the major banks and network with influential alumni. There is no better way to jump start your internship or job search.

Note: Arts & Sciences students must register for Seminar in Financial Literacy to participate in the trip.  Engineering students will be selected based on application materials and may participate in the entire course or choose to attend only the trip. Registration priority will be given to juniors.

Course registration will take place from October 29 to November 16 in the Career Center in Garland Hall, 3rd Fl.  Complete registration materials will include:
  - Resume
  - Unofficial Transcript
  - 1-page (maximum) statement about your interest in a financial services career
  - Course Registration Form
