Opportunities

The COE is accepting applications for postdoctoral and research scientist positions.

Please submit your application by January 4, 2010 for consideration of postdoctoral and junior research scientist positions.

For information about applying to participate in the Summer Camp for Applied Language Exploration (SCALE) please click here.

The Human Language Technology Center of Excellence

The Human Language Technology Center of Excellence (COE) at the Johns Hopkins University is seeking to hire outstanding Ph.D. researchers in the field of speech and natural language processing. The COE seeks the most talented candidates for both junior and senior level academic positions. Candidates will be expected to work in a team setting with other researchers and graduate students from the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland College Park and other affiliated institutions.

The COE, founded in January 2007, has a long-term research contract as an independent center within Johns Hopkins University. Located next to Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, the COE’s distinguished contract partners include the University of Maryland College Park, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, and BBN Technologies of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

World-class researchers at the COE focus on solutions to challenge problems that have both strong theoretical underpinnings and direct applicability to practical problems. The COE offers substantial computing capability for research that requires heavy computation and massive storage.

In the summer of 2009, the COE held its first annual Summer Camp for Applied Language Exploration (SCALE), inviting the world's foremost researchers in speech and NLP. Researchers are expected to publish in peer-reviewed venues.

Research Focus Areas

Candidates should have significant expertise in one of the following areas:

  • NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING: Information extraction, knowledge distillation, knowledge base population, temporal qualification, machine translation, language understanding and semantics, text processing, etc.
  • SPEECH PROCESSING:  Candidates should have a strong background in speech processing, including robust speech recognition across languages, formal vs. informal genres, speaker or language identification, speech retrieval, and spoken term detection.  Also desired is interest in machine learning and statistical modeling.

MACHINE LEARNING:  Learning on very large datasets and streams for text and/or speech, feature extraction, domain adaptation, semi-supervised learning, unsupervised learning, etc.

  • Candidates should have a strong history of academic research and multiple publications in areas of direct relevance to COE focus areas. COE researchers must have demonstrated abilities to build HLT systems and conduct high quality publishable research.

Positions

The COE hires at several levels based on experience and background.

1) Junior Level Positions: Postdocs and Research Scientists

Junior level positions are available for recent PhD graduates seeking to continue their training as postdoctoral researchers or research scientists. Candidates in this area are expected to have shown initial promise as research leaders in the community. Postdoctoral positions run from 1-2 years and can lead to permanent research scientist positions.

2) Senior Level Positions

The COE seeks to hire established senior researchers. Candidates are expected to have strong publication records and an established position as a leader in their field. Applications for senior level positions are reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested applicants should submit a CV to hltcoe-hiring@jhu.edu.

3) Sabbatical Positions

Professors and researchers are invited to visit the COE as part of a sabbatical period, ranging from a semester to two years. We are seeking sabbatical candidates who can make a lasting contribution to our research goals and to shape research objectives. Applications for sabbatical positions are reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested applicants should submit a CV to hltcoe-hiring@jhu.edu.

4) Postdoctoral and Other Fellowships

We welcome recipients of postdoctoral and other fellowship funding to host their fellowship at the COE. Such fellowship opportunities include the Computing Innovation Fellows Project and the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program. Applicants to these programs are encouraged to contact the COE for more information (hltcoe-hiring@jhu.edu) or to contact appropriate COE researchers directly.
