Johns Hopkins University is recruiting districts for a new study that compares two strategies for teaching Algebra 1 to freshmen who test 1 to 4 years below grade level in mathematics. One strategy has students catching up in math by taking a first-semester transition math course developed by Johns Hopkins, followed by an Algebra 1 course during second semester. The other strategy places students directly into Algebra 1 and provides extra time for teachers to work on closing skill gaps when needed. Both strategies provide a “double dose” of mathematics. For participating districts, Johns Hopkins will provide student and teacher materials, classroom manipulatives, a teacher coach, and professional development. Districts are being sought for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years. The ideal district will have six high schools that are willing to participate. For more information about the study, see the FAQ.
