Adult Bilingual Training
The Institute is an effort to improve the quality of workforce training provided to educationally disadvantaged English language learners who are seeking training to enter, re-enter or advance within the workforce. This initiative was funded through a generous grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration in 2001-2002. Initial funding provided for the development of instructor training modules designed to bolster the instructional skills of incumbent teachers working in bilingual workforce education programs.

ARISE is a nonprofit educational foundation established in 1986, by the husband and wife team of Susan and Edmund F. Benson. To date, the ARISE group has researched, written, and taught all curricula. They have also trained and certified over 3,000 life-skills instructors who have gone on to teach more than 500,000 at-risk youth for over 2,000,000 (Two Million) documented hours of ARISE Life-Management Skills Lessons across the U.S. — no other life-skills program even comes close. The ARISE professional life-skills training course can reduce staff turnover, lessen staff stress, improve staff communication skills, reduce liability exposure, and most of all, provide needed know-how to easily teach these important social skills to often reluctant students with serious behavior problems.

CREDE is a federally funded research and development program focused on improving the education of students whose ability to reach their potential is challenged by language or cultural barriers, race, geographic location, or poverty.
Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST)
The National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) is a partnership of UCLA, the University of Colorado, Stanford University, RAND, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Southern California, Educational Testing Service, and the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The CRESST mission focuses on the assessment of educational quality, addressing persistent problems in the design and use of assessment systems to serve multiple purposes.
Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA)
The Center for the improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) is a national center for research on early reading, representing a consortium of educators from five universities (the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, with the University of Southern California, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Georgia); teacher educators; teachers; publishers of texts, tests, and technology; professional organizations; and schools and school districts across the United States.
Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy (CTP)
The Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy, a consortium of several major universities, focuses on the system-wide improvement of learning and teaching and the development of a highly capable, committed teaching force. Center researchers study ways that leaders, policymakers, and others seek to renew the quality of teaching and the teacher force through strategies and initiatives enacted at the local and state level, in school systems and teacher education institutions, and through the engagement of supportive groups in the community.
Howard University - Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk (CRESPAR)
CRESPAR (The Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk) is a collaborative effort between Howard and Johns Hopkins Universities. This research and development center, which is funded by OERI ( the Office of Educational Research and Improvement in the U.S. Department of Education), has launched an important comprehensive school initiative designed to enhance the achievement, academic environment, and quality of life for students, teachers, and parents.

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) provides research and development assistance to education, government, community agencies, business, and labor. NWREL's primary service area is the Northwest states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The Special Strategies studies were developed to accomplish three goals: 1) Describe promising alternatives for Chapter 1 practices. This included collecting in-depth information about the day-to-day operation of a variety of innovative teaching and programming strategies. 2) Compare the characteristics of promising alternatives to more traditional practices. This included gathering various process and outcome measures across several program types and contrasting those results with the more quantitative data gathered in Prospects (Puma, Rock, & Fernandez, 1993). 3) Assess the replicability of programs that appear most successful. This included evaluating factors that might facilitate or impede implementation elsewhere.
